Chinese Traditional Dessert - Mooncake for Mid-Autumn Festival 2022 (Part 2/2)

I made 2 separate rounds of purchase for my mooncakes this year. For the 1st time, I purchased it early online (one month prior to the festival) and managed to enjoy 25% early-bird discount. The 2nd time, a good friend and I braved through the super duper crowded Mooncake Fair at Takashimaya.

Competition for mooncakes can be fiery fierce every single year since there are plenty of bakeries, restaurants, hotels, and even home-based bakeries selling these bakes. This leaves consumers with the luxury of cherry picking from a wide sea of choices.

East Ocean Teochew Restaurant
A popular Chinese restaurant serving Teochew Cantonese cuisine and dim sum in Singapore for 30 years.

〰 Yam Mooncake 3.5/5
There is a saying if we want to get good yam mooncakes, then one will not go wrong by getting it from a Teochew restaurant. Since I like the food at this restaurant, so I thought to try out the yam mooncakes here. This is my 1st time having Yam Mooncake.

The pastry skin was flaky, light and buttery with smooth yam filling. However, being a sweet-tooth lover, I wish for the yam to be sweeter. This may appeal more for people who prefer something that isn’t so sweet.

I got to say that I wasn’t too impressed, or perhaps I’m just not a fan of yam mooncakes. I somewhat imagined this to taste like my favourite Orh Nee dessert. Maybe that is why I didn’t manage to feel impressed by it.

〰 Baked Skin Mooncake Double Yolk 4.5/5 〰
Initially, I didn’t wanted to get this. But I am SO glad that I did! This seriously exceeded my expectations and may taste even better than my favourite baked mooncake from Raffles Hotel (which I didn’t purchase it this year).

The lotus paste was very tasty and smooth with the right amount of oiliness. Not too oily and not too dry as well.

〰 Piggy Mooncake 3.5/5 〰
This is one of the big favourites in mid-autumn festival, where it is usually packed in tiny plastic basket. It is my first time having this. Can’t say that I’m not a fan of this as the skin pastry is a little too thick for my liking.

The Fullerton Hotels & Resorts
A luxury 5-star iconic hotel in SG. So.. are the mooncakes any good? I purchased this from the Takashimaya fair; this is the only snow skin mooncake that managed to catch my eye and heart. Aside from the beautiful and presentable gift box (which I have now use it to store my watches), I am lured by what sound like very yummy flavours to me, and I knew I just got to get it.

Osmanthus with Wolfberry [Best Seller] 〰

I now know why this has made it to be one of their best sellers. This mooncake is incredibly fragrant and tasty. The osmanthus note is dominant yet light and refreshing at the same time. I am glad I tried this out.

〰 Rose Bandung 〰

Another very fragrant mooncake in pretty pink color. A rather light and very delicious mooncake treat with robust hints of the rose flavour.

〰 Pandan with Gula Melaka 〰

Honestly, this flavour was a little disappointing. The pandan taste is very mild and I did not manage to taste much of gula melaka either. To be fair, I checked with my husband who ate this right after opening while I only ate it after 1 day of opening the pack. My husband shares the same sentiments as me. He thought that the taste wasn’t too bad, however, he couldn’t detect much of pandan gula melaka flavour too.

〰 White Lotus Seed Paste with Single Yolk 〰
A traditional classic that lives up to my expectation. It tasted as good as I have imagined it to be from a good hotel.

Hong Kong Mei Xin 香港美心 4/5

This was introduced by my bestie. She told me that whenever her friend from HK came to visit her in SG, he will always buy back cookies and eggrolls for her from this shop. Coming from a person with a fussy taste bud and praising how good their snacks are, I decided to try some baked mooncakes here.

I bought a pack of 2 baked mooncakes which consists of 2 different versions: White Lotus Seed Paste Mooncake with Egg Yolk and Lotus Seed Paste Mooncake with Egg Yolk.

There is a difference between the white lotus vs lotus paste. Auntie at the store told me white lotus paste is smoother while lotus paste is more fragrant; and normally Hong Kong consumers will prefer the Lotus Paste more.

I’ve tried Lotus Paste and it was delicious. It sure exceeded what I had expected in mind due to the much lower pricing in comparison to hotel made mooncakes.

Swiss-Garden International Hotel

Tropical Emerald 5/5
Halal-certified, Low Sugar

A baked mooncake made with pandan lotus paste and coconut concoction. I enjoyed how aromatic and savoury this tasted. It was certainly worth every bang for my buck. I only bought one piece from them, however the service staffs at the booth still gave me the highest level of service. Kudos to the team.

Banyan Tree Hotel & Resorts

My husband saw this in Thailand, unfortunately he did not managed to purchase it. I'm sure these tasted awesome too.

I hope you have enjoyed reading this mooncake reviews. Wish you all a very Happy Mid-Autumn Festival !
